The lives and trades of Chiltern people by Dr Helena Chance
The Woodlanders Lives and Landscapes is a community social history project. We welcome Dr Chance and her colleagues who will tell us of their activities and findings.
For more than two centuries, the Central Chilterns was a thriving industrial landscape. The woods and villages were alive with men, women and children making furniture, woodware, straw plaiting for hats, lace making and tambour beading (applying beading and sequins for the fashion industry).
What were their lives really like?
In an illustrated talk, Woodlanders project leader Helena Chance, and research volunteers, Keith Spencer and Susan Holmes will tell us about the “Lives and Landscapes” project, and about some of the exciting new research, they are uncovering.

An introduction to Beekeeping by Dorothie Jones
I have been interested in nature since I was a child. I studied botany and zoology at university and I think I always wanted to be David Attenborough!
When I retired in 2015, I signed up for the beginners course.
I keep bees in my garden, and my husband now describes himself as a "bee-widower!" I think we are extremely lucky to have such an active and supportive club here in the Chalfonts. I continue to learn so much from the club and its members. My goal is to become a better practical beekeeper.

Single Handed Long Distance Sailing
John Apps, who has sailed every ocean except the Indian Ocean, will talk about why some people will put up with discomfort, poor food, interrupted sleep, extreme weather, inexplicable breakages and loneliness to sail the oceans of the world by themselves in small boats.
Single-handed ocean sailing has been described as 99% boredom with occasional terror, panic and moments of splendour. John will give us examples of all of them!
It's like the Zen Dog – it’s the glory of the ride
